There was not a large settlement in the beginning on the Mainland due to the lack of fertile soil. Meanwhile, Crete and Aegean had fertile soils that grew olive trees, grape vines and a forest. They also had a great source of water, which contained fish. The fish not only served as a form of food but also a way for economic growth though trade. The olive trees were the most valuable. The olives could be turned into Olive Oil. Olive Oil had a variety of functions including but not limited to, uses for cooking, religious ceremonies and fuel for lighting lamps.
All of these natural resource made these islands extremely desirable for early settlement.
